It Matters

My word for 2016 is Strong.

This year I want to become stronger physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually. I want this word to remind me to pause before making decisions and ask “Will this make me strong?”

Ice cream at bedtime? Um… no.

Working out? Yes!

Spending time reading the Bible? Yes!

As I pursue this word I know that my weakness will be the one thing that doubt and darkness whisper to my heart whenever I’m at a crossroads.

It doesn’t matter.

Their whisper may come at any time.

It may come when the alarm goes off for that early morning workout… It doesn’t matter if you don’t work out today.

When the phone rings in the middle of writing time… Answer it. It doesn’t matter if you don’t write today.

When I need to tell my husband how I really feel about something… Don’t bring up that subject, you’ll only cause conflict.

Have you heard that whisper too?

This year I am putting my foot down. Because it DOES matter. When I work out I feel better and think more clearly. Finishing my book DOES matter because the world needs to hear this story of hope. Being honest in my marriage DOES matter because it makes our marriage stronger.

Will you join me? We can put our feet down and stomp out this beautiful truth together: pursuing our word matters.

The word we choose matters because of its ripple effect. If you and I are going to be fearless, courageous, authentic, hopeful, healthy, faithful, or whatever word you choose, those around us will be affected. It’s pretty amazing to think about. The impact of one word on each of our lives this year will impact those around us – each and every life that our lives touch.

The word we choose matters because each one of us has a purpose no one else can fulfill. Whether for an audience of thousands or for the few people living in our home, God has placed us exactly where we are to impact those around us.

I believe that Tim Keller is correct when he says “Every good endeavor, even the simplest ones, pursued in response to God’s calling, can matter forever.”

It Matters 2

What would change in your life if you pursued your word? What difference would it make?

As I look at the year ahead, I see a finished book about fighting for hope, more honesty and openness in my marriage, more confidence in being physically strong. I see healthy patterns for my children to follow.  This makes me so excited about 2016!

What about you? What differences can you see in the days ahead?
