Focusing on our One Word

Whether you have already chosen a One-Word, or still unsure of which One-Word to choose, everyone (Christians and non-Christians alike) all share one important word together. That word is happiness.

God created us to enjoy happiness—happiness that comes from being in God’s presence. Unfortunately, sin causes us to seek happiness elsewhere. In the case of Adam and Eve, they sought happiness through their attempt to become like God rather than being with God. And we all know how the story goes. In fact, this is much like our own stories: stories of searching, wandering, and still not finding happiness. Likewise, if our word does not focus on God, it would just become another attempt at searching and wandering for happiness without Christ.

However, God-centered One-Words push us to make progress towards a stronger and deeper relationship with God. It puts the focus on godly happiness, the only true happiness we were created to experience.

Philippians 3:12-14 says: “I’m not saying that I have this all together, that I have it made. But I am well on my way, reaching out for Christ, who has so wondrously reached out for me. Friends, don’t get me wrong: By no means do I count myself an expert in all of this, but I’ve got my eye on the goal, where God is beckoning us onward—to Jesus. I’m off and running, and I’m not turning back.” (The Message)

How beautiful is this paraphrase! As Christ followers, we are all in this progress together, but as Apostle Paul says, we will never have this “all together”. That’s why we should view our One-Word as our goal, and the year as our opportunity to make progress, just as sanctification is a progress and a process to becoming more like Jesus Christ.

Come December 31, 2013 we will all look back at our One-Word. Many of us may not be able to confidently say, “I’ve mastered this word! Now, give me the next one.” Rather, we will find ourselves praising God for the progress we have made through God’s help, and repent of our shortcomings. So, let us focus on the nature and purpose of our One-Word—to enrich our lives with godly happiness by focusing on a single word that will help us to grow in our loving relationship with our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.

On that note, as a first time One-Worder, I have chosen focus as my one word. I will be focusing on my word as I focus on God in everything that I do.
